Rashida Jones and Adam Scott Talk Season 4 of Parks and Recreation with Access Hollywood

Aug 3

INTERVIEWER: I do want to ask about your character because we saw sort of a cliff hanger in the last episode of the last season. There seems to be a spark between the two of you and things are finally moving in the direction of being a couple and then whammo politics gets in the way.
AMY POEHLER: Yeah we got cockblocked-can we say that?
INTERVIEWER: Yeah, we’re cable.
AMY POEHLER: We get politically cockblocked.
ADAM SCOTT: There’s an E! show called Cockblocked, isn’t there?
INTERVIEWER: I think it’s called Celebrity Cockblock.
ADAM SCOTT: Yeah, celebrity—
AMY POEHLER: Celebrity Cockblock?!
ADAM SCOTT: You get like Mario Lopez help you not get laid.
AMY POEHLER: No, they put blocks on their penis!
ADAM SCOTT: Yeah!
AMY POEHLER: And they stack them up and they’re like “Mario Lopez look how many blocks you have on your penis?!”
ADAM SCOTT: “You’re holding 83 blocks!” and then he’s like “whoaaaaa!” and then they fall over.
AMY POEHLER: And then there’s a panel of people being like “I didn’t like it when the blocks fell off his penis.
ADAM SCOTT: All the Kardashians are like “hmmm…”
INTERVIEWER: Why are you not development executives? This is what we need on television! (x)

“Offerman goes on to say that Clarkson is “exactly what we wanted” in bringing Ron’s heretofore alluded-to but never-seen first wife to life. For one, he notes, “She’s exactly the same size as Megan.” Plus, “She has such a commanding sexuality combined with a sort of wild side” — not much unlike her successor, we’d say! Surveying Ron’s choice in brides, Offerman says, “They’re like an evil Snow White and Rose Red duo.” Clarkson was in Los Angeles at the time Parks and Rec made its choice, “So the three of us had a drink to celebrate the news,” Offerman shares. “She was wearing a white dress and Megan was wearing dark colors, and I’m looking at the two of them just thinking, ‘What the hell did I do to get so lucky? I’m a lucky bastard.” Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally ‘Over the Moon’ About Parks and Recreation’s Pick for Tammy 1 - TVLine (via apsies)

“Leslie and Ron is probably, now, the other central relationship on the show. And that developed into a thing. There’s an old adage about when people want their daddy, they vote Republican, when they want mommy, they vote Democratic. You know, the stereotype of the nurturing, caring mother and the tough, disciplining father, and that’s sort of what they’ve become. The mommy and daddy of the world of the office.”

“They’re polar opposites, and the story we designed was that April’s character was maybe a little bit weary of being weary of everything. And maybe she was a little bit tired of seven layers of irony cloaking every decision she made. Of hanging out with only really dry, ironic, hipster-y gay dudes who were also her boyfriends. And maybe Andy’s completely open, heart-on-his-sleeve kind of way would appeal to her at some level, and it just sort of took off from there.” Michael Schur on why April fell for Andy via The AV Club

The best improv in the show’s history was [Chris] Pratt’s, and it was in “Flu Season,” when Ben is walking Leslie out the door to go to the doctor, and Andy is just taking over as Ron’s assistant. As they’re walking by, Pratt says, “Hey Leslie, I typed your symptoms into the thing up here, and it says you could have network connectivity problems.” If I could write a joke that good, I would be a happy man.” Michael Schur via The AV Club

“And then with Leslie and Ben we wanted a romance for our main character, and we designed a character. You know, in the very first episode that they’re in, she comes in and yells at him for the third time. And he goes, “You wanna go get a beer?” And she says, “It’s 11 in the morning!” And he’s like, “I think you could use a beer.” And so they go have a beer in the bar, and he very casually says to her, “You want to run for office some day, right?” And she says, “Yeah, how did you know that?” And he just blows by it and says, “If you want to run for office, you gotta be an adult, you gotta make these tough decisions.” And that was designed to show right away that he had identified her as a kindred spirit. He understood her, and he had identified that she is ambitious and she has a plan for her life and her career.

And the flip side of that is when she says, “Have you ever been elected to office before?” And he says, “Yes, in a tiny town called Partridge, Minnesota,” and she goes, “Wait a second, you’re Benji Wyatt?” And she, when she was a kid, read about him. So the idea was always, let’s create a character for her whom she hates at first—because that’s more fun than love-at-first-sight, for a comedy show, at least—and two people who were maybe fundamentally different but are also, in some ways, fundamentally the same, and slowly move them toward each other. And that was the other main arc for the season, Leslie and Ben starting off very much at odds and then him simultaneously falling in love with the town and her.

Amy typically encapsulated this more eloquently than I ever could by saying that Leslie’s like the single mom and Pawnee’s her kid. And if you love Pawnee, then she’ll love you. So the idea for us was to show Ben slowly being won over by the town. Like in “Time Capsule,” he says he actually finds the passion of the public forum inspiring. And he says, “Don’t get me wrong. These people are weirdos, but they’re weirdos who care.” And she looks at him, and I think that’s the first moment when she looks at him and thinks, “I like you. I’ve identified you as a person I like.” And so the whole season was about them coming together and him simultaneously falling for the town. Finding a home.”
